Against the Storm coming to consoles

Last summer, I said I was going to do a review on the DLC for Against the Storm. And then I realized I wasn’t far enough along to experience all of it, so I let it be. Well, now I am far enough along, and if you’re a console gamer, you can get far along as well: because Against the Storm is coming to consoles on June 26.

If you’re unaware of Against the Storm, it’s a roguelike city builder. Or, as the trailer calls it, a cities builder. Because you’re going to be living in a world that, eventually, will stop existing. Every few years, everything but your capital of the Smouldering City will be destroyed by a vicious rainstorm. Between those times, you must go out into the land and build your own cities, collecting resources and looking for ways to delay the next coming storm. You win once you are prestigious enough to make your queen happy, but the happiness has to come quick. Because she’s slowly getting more and more impatient with you, and once she reaches her max, you lose.

You’ll also lose when the forest reaches its impatience. Because it’s not just the rain that wants to destroy the world, the forest does too. Wood is one of your best resources, but the more trees you get to it, the angrier the forest will get. And your very best resource–people–will make the forest even angrier. The roguelike of the game comes from the fact that so many things that help you are also hurting you. Not only that, but you can’t build everything. Each run give you different blueprints that force you to form a different strategy. You can’t do what you did last time, because what you did last time no longer exists.

If you haven’t played Against the Storm yet, I definitely suggest checking it out, PC or console. Maybe find a YouTuber who plays the game, that’s a good way to learn if you’re going to like any game. And if you’re on console and have been waiting for it: mark June 26 on your calendar, when it will be coming out for Playstation, Xbox, and Switch.
